Assignment #11

Oppression means when cruel or unjust treatment that is prolonged. The difference between Violent and Non-Violent resistance is Violent Resistance to Oppression harms people and things but unlike Violent Resistance to Oppression Non-Violent Resistance to Oppression does not harm anyone or anything. Agency is the ability to determine the outcome of one’s own life. Oppressed people should use Non-Violent Resistance to gain Agency. Oppressed people should use Non-Violent Resistance to gain Agency because when I did my SeeClickFix project I had the ability to control what I want fixed in my life and I did not get hurt while doing it either. Another example of why Oppressed people should use Non-Violent Resistance to gain Agency because during the Oscar Grant protests the people used Violent Resistance and some of them ended up in Jail that night and that did not give them the ability to determine the outcome of their own life.

To begin with, This document supports my answer to the essay question because when the people of Ferguson heard of another Police brutality against a young black man happening the people of Ferguson went to the streets to protest. This document is about the events that happened in Ferguson over Police brutality. This document is an article from the internet called “The 2014 Ferguson Protests Over The Michael Brown Shooting, Explained.” This article was written by German Lopez on January 27, 2016. Yes, The information provided by the source is reliable. The information provided by the source is reliable because it has a date that is recent and this information is not old news. A quote from this document that supports my answer is ”The shooting almost immediately triggered protests in the St. Louis suburb, as demonstrators took to the streets to speak out against what many saw as yet another example of police brutality against young black men.” This quote shows how oppressed people should use Non-Violent Resistance to gain agency because as soon as the people of Ferguson heard of another example of police brutality against a young black man they had a protest. At that protest they were able to voice their opinions therefore giving them agency to say whatever they want.

Next , the SeeClickFix document supports my answer to the essay question because people used Non-Violent Resistance to gain agency by reporting it to SeeClickFix and that is giving them the ability to fix something in their neighborhood they do not like. This document is about the statuses of everyone’s issue that was reported to SeeClickFix. This document is a data poster. This document was created by Jason Muniz on April 27 , 2018. The information provided in this document is Trustworthy because it was provided by a Primary Source. A quote from this document that supports my answer is “ Acknowledged Trash Dumping – 8” This quote shows why people should use Non-Violent Resistance to gain Agency because Nobody was harmed and the problem they wanted to fix got solved.

Lastly , The Oscar Grant Protests document supports my answer because oppressed people should use Non-Violent Resistance to gain agency so they do not have to go to jail and not have the ability to control what goes on in their life. This document is about what happened after a young black unarmed man was shot in Fruitvale BART. This document is an excerpt from an article titled “In California, Protests After Man Dies at Hands of Transit Police” This article was created by Jesse McKinley. This article was created on January 8, 2009. The information provided in the document is not trustworthy. The information in this document is not trustworthy because it is coming from a second source that was not at the event. Also the information in this document is coming from someone in New York and the shooting happened in California. A quote from this document that supports my answer to the question is “Police officers in riot gear responded with tear gas and nightsticks, and arrested protesters on charges of vandalism, unlawful assembly, rioting and assault on a police officer. “ The evidence I quoted shows why people should use Non-Violent Resistance to gain agency because if you use Violent Resistance you will go to jail and not be able to determine the outcome of your own life.

The different statuses on the posters are , “Open Acknowledged and Closed.”  Open means that your problem is still open and they have not got to it yet. Acknowledged means they’ve seen your problem and their trying to fix it. Lastly, Closed means they either fixed it or they can’t.

  • Describe what you did (or what you were supposed to do) to find out if the issue you submitted to SeeClickFix was fixed.

  • Describe the response you got about the issue you reported.  What was the message you received? Who sent you that message?

The message I received about my report is something to help me have this problem fixed.  The message said, “Try calling the PWD Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Right of Way Management 238-3651. FYI they cannot repair with asphalt it must be done with concrete by PWD own rules. Do not let them cheat.” This message was sent to me by David Coleman.

The SeeClickFix project is an example of Non-Violent resistance to oppression because you are not harming  nobody, damaging anything, or doing anything violent.

Yes, I think SeeClickFix can solve problems in Oakland. Assignment #9

Oppressed people means people who have faced cruel or unjust treatment that has been prolonged. A system is an organized way of doing something and oppression is cruel and unjust treatment that is prolonged so when you get systems of oppression it is an organized way of oppressing people. Levels of oppression means ways of oppression that oppress you. A way oppressed people experience different levels and systems of oppression is when you get organized into a group because of the things they need , make , and share. Also, people go through different levels and systems of oppression because of rules that describe how decisions are made and who has the authority to make them. Lastly, oppressed people go through levels and systems of oppression because of the relationships they have with one another.

To begin with, one way oppressed people experience systems of oppression is when they go through political oppression. Political oppression is an example of how oppressed people face different systems of oppression because the terrorists have decisions and rules over the girl and if they don’t follow the rules they get punished. Another way oppressed people face levels of oppression is when they face interpersonal oppression. This is an example of how oppressed people face different levels of oppression because the terrorists throw acid in the girls faces just for going to school. This document is about how terrorists treat young ladies in Afghan who want to receive an education. This document is an article on the internet called, “Acid Attacks Poison: What Afghan Girls Risk By Going To School.”This article was written by Allie Torgan on March 17,2016. A quote from this document that describes systems of oppression is, “In their eyes a woman is an object that they can’t control, they are scared that when these girls get an education they will become aware of their rights.” This quote proves how oppressed people experience the different Systems of Oppression because they have to face terrorist torturing them everyday just for trying to get an education. This quote also reveals how oppressed people face different systems of oppression because they don’t have a decision if they want to go to school or not and they also don’t have authority over their decisions.

Another way oppressed people experience levels of oppression is when they go through institutional oppression. Institutional oppression is oppression that happens because of laws , rules , and policies. Also, oppressed people also face systems of oppressions like social systems. Social systems organize people based on the relationships they have with one another. This document is about how prisons figure out how many people are going to come in contact with law enforcement and how many prisons they need to make just by looking at the way the kids behave in school. This document is a quote from an article on the internet titled, “Understanding the School-to-Prison Pipeline.” This article was created by Nicki Lisa Cole in April 25 ,2017. A quote from this document that explains institutional oppression and Social oppression is , “Having a zero tolerance policy… that means a school has zero tolerance for any kind of misbehavior or violation of school rules.” The evidence I quoted proves how oppressed people face different systems of oppression because they go to school with rules that have zero tolerance for any misbehavior. The evidence I quoted also proves how oppressed people face levels of oppression because the oppression happens because of the laws, rules, and policies.

Assignment #8

Power means the ability to control events and the behaviors of other people. Marginalize means to put to the side or less important. To exploit it means to take unfair advantage of someone for your own benefit. People with power are able to exploit and marginalize people with different identities because of colonization. Colonization is when people from one territory take over the people and land in another territory. For powerful people to take over another land the powerful people had better weapons and they also brought diseases to territories they wanted to take over.

To begin with, People with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because the people with power  have better weapons, more gold, and more people working for them than people with different identities. For example, the Spanish Captain requested local leaders to bring him large quantities of gold. This document is a quote from a book titled “In Defense Of The Indians.” This book was created by Bartolome De Las Casas in the year 1521. “The Spanish Captain, meanwhile requested the local [leaders] to bring him large quantities of gold.” This quote proves how people with different identities are being marginalized and exploited by people with power because if the Spanish Captain can request leaders to bring him gold, that means the Spanish Captain can request for much more. Also if you have gold and riches you can buy better weapons and take unfair advantages of people who are not as wealthy as you for your own benefit.

Second of all , People with power are able to exploit and marginalize people with different identities because they have more people on their side. For example Pastor James David Manning has  religious people that come to his church on his side.  In a document  , Pastor James David Manning put anti gay messages in the front of his church and he is preaching to religious people that it is bad to be gay. This document is a article from a news website called Amsterdam News.com. The article was called, “Homophobic Church Sign Causes Stir In Harlem.”  This article was written by Cyril Josh Barker on May 3rd 2014. A quote that supports my evidence that people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities is “Manning’s message that homosexuality is against god’s wishes and the bible.” This quote proves why people with power are able to exploit people with different identities because Pastor James is controlling the religious people’s behaviors by telling them what is wrong and what is right about their religion and what not to do. This quote also proves how people with power are able to marginalize people with different identities because Pastor James is putting people with different beliefs and sexuality off to the side and he is making the religious people try and do that to.

Finally, people with power are able to exploit and marginalize people with different identities because they make people with different identities  work for them to make sure they have everything they want and need. For example, A very seasoned warrior changed into a god named “ Tezcatlipoca” and he was treated like the most royal family member. While he was god he was given all of the finest luxuries from the noble storehouses including foods, clothes, teachers, woman , and even instruction until it led up to his sacrifice. This document is a letter created by a 17 year old scribe. This letter was created in 1522 but it was told to Friar Bernardino De Sahagun in 1529. A quote that supports my evidence that proves how people with power are able to exploit and marginalize people with different identities is “Tezcatlipoca can have no blemish upon his body, and he is treated like our most royal family member during the long year leading up to his sacrifice.” This quote proves how people with different identities are being exploited because Tezcatlipoca has other people washing his body and getting him everything and he is treating them like slaves. This quote also proves how people are being marginalized because if you are not the god Tezcatlipoca you are not getting the same treatment as others.
